Declared First-Quarter Revenue Lower Than the Amount Reported by the Platform? Another Group of Sellers Receives Tax Reminders

Todaymorning, several seller chat groups erupted almost simultaneously.
In Guangdong, Fujian, and Zhejiang, companies in different cities received tax text messages with almost identical wording: The sales revenue you declared for the first quarter of 2026 is lower than the revenue amount reported by the internet platform to the tax authorities. If this is a filing error, please correct it promptly.

Many people's first reaction was: Am I being targeted?
My answer is: You have not been singled out. You were flagged by the system. These are fundamentally different situations, but the consequences could be equally serious.
If the competent tax authorities had identified problems by reviewing each company's books individually, three provinces could not have sent text messages on the same day using the same wording. This looks more like the system performed a batch comparison and then sent standardized risk alerts to companies with discrepancies.
After State Council Order No. 810 took effect in 2025, the tax-related information reporting system for internet platforms was gradually implemented. Platforms are required to regularly report information such as operators' identities and revenue to the tax authorities. In month 8 of this year, a report published by the State Taxation Administration made this clear: Data reported by platforms must be routinely compared with data declared by taxpayers themselves. Those with substantial discrepancies are reminded through text messages and other channels to verify and correct their filings.
Platform reporting, system comparisons, and text message reminders. This process is now fully operational.
In the past, whatever you declared, the tax bureau generally just looked at your filing form. Now there is another set of books on the table—the platform's—and the platform itself submitted it.
It is now month 10. The third-quarter filing has just been completed, yet the text message concerns the first quarter.
What does this tell us? It tells us that past quarters for which you have already filed, and which you thought were settled, can still be brought back for another comparison. Today it is Q1; next time it could be last year's Q4, or even earlier.
Many sellers think, "Once I've filed, I'm safe." From the moment this text message arrived, that assumption no longer holds.
To be fair,Amazonsellers' declared revenue failing to match platform data is extremely common, and in most cases it is not intentional.
The most typical case is treating payouts as revenue. A consumer pays 100 US dollars, but after the platform deducts commissions, advertising fees, storage fees, and logistics fees, only sixty-something dollars may reach your account. If the finance team recognizes revenue directly based on the amount received, revenue will naturally be significantly understated. The platform reports the former, while you declare the latter. That is how the discrepancy arises.
The second is the timing difference in the 9810overseas warehousemodel. Goods are exported in bulk to an overseas warehouse at the beginning of the year, then gradually sold on Amazon over the following months. The customs declaration value, the platform's sales for the current period, and the tax filing figures inherently differ in recognition timing and calculation basis.
The third is an entity mismatch. The store is registered under Company A, payouts go to Company B, and the tax filing is made by Company C. The platform reports under the entity registered for the store, while you file according to your own understanding. What the system sees is an unexplained discrepancy.
So the real risk is never simply "having a discrepancy." It is having a discrepancy but being unable to explain it with order records, expense breakdowns, and documentation linking exports to sales. If you can explain it clearly, it is a difference in reporting basis. If you cannot, the tax bureau can only interpret it based on the figures it sees.
## Don't Wait for the Next Text Message
If you have received a text message, do not panic, but do not delay either. Retrieve the platform sales reports and expense breakdowns for the relevant quarter, and compare them item by item with your actual filing. If there was indeed a filing error, correct it in accordance with the law. If the discrepancy stems from the reporting basis or the entity involved, prepare all supporting documentation and proactively communicate with the competent tax authority.
If you have not received one, do not count yourself lucky. The system scans in batches. Not receiving a message in this batch does not mean you will not receive one in the next.
The core of cross-border financial and tax compliance is not paying less tax. It is ensuring that the five sets of figures for procurement, exports, sales, foreign exchange receipts, and tax filings reconcile with one another—and that you can first explain any differences yourself. The platform's data has already been submitted. Are your books ready?
